A brand new restaurant concept called Izakaya Sora is planned for 220 Beach St. in Laguna Beach, according to a recent liquor license filing. The application lists Sota Akiyama as the owner, a longtime sushi chef and restaurateur.
An opening date has not yet been announced, but the new project marks the next step in Akiyama’s journey. Born in Japan, he built his career across coastal Orange County and brings decades of experience in the Japanese dining scene.
The new Laguna Beach concept comes as Akiyama works to recover from a fire that forced the closure of his previous restaurant, Sota Sushi. In a recent Instagram update, the team shared the rebuilding process:
“While the process is slower than we hoped, progress is finally happening. We are doing everything possible to rebuild and reopen as quickly as we can. This fire originated next door to us, but the damage it caused has deeply impacted our restaurant and our team. We are incredibly grateful for the support our community has shown us during this difficult time.”
Over the years, Akiyama has worked at notable restaurants in the region and has also operated a private chef business, building a loyal community along the way.
Whatnow Orange County has reached out to Akiyama for additional details and will update this page as more information becomes available.
