For diners who have ever wished they could wander through a bustling Tokyo alleyway without leaving Arizona, a new Scottsdale project is aiming to make that possible.

Restaurateur Huy Truong is preparing to bring Atashi Yokocho to The Sydney, located at 7339 E. McDonald Drive in Scottsdale.

The concept is expected to open in 2028 at the large mixed-use development taking shape near Loop 101 and Pima Road, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Inspired by Japan’s yokocho culture, a network of narrow alleyways lined with small restaurants and bars, the project is expected to feature around 15 individual eateries operating under one roof.

Huy Truong has built a reputation for introducing acclaimed Japanese brands to the Valley. His growing portfolio includes multiple locations of Mensho Ramen, the Michelin-recognized ramen concept from Tokyo, as well as Udon Shin, a celebrated Japanese noodle restaurant that recently opened in Mesa.

With Atashi Yokocho, the restaurateur hopes to showcase a wider range of Japanese cuisine. Plans call for concepts serving ramen, sushi, tempura, yakitori, yakiniku, kaiseki and other regional specialties.

Some restaurant spaces could accommodate as few as eight guests, while others may seat up to 50. Huy Truong is also exploring opportunities for rotating pop-up concepts, allowing Japanese operators to introduce their brands to Arizona diners through limited engagements.

The project will join a growing collection of restaurant and entertainment tenants at The Sydney.

Whatnow Phoenix reached out to Huy Truong and this article may be updated as more information becomes available.
