Sergeant Ma, Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group’s anticipated waterfront restaurant in San Francisco’s China Basin neighborhood, is slated to open in early September 2026.

Located across from Oracle Park overlooking Mission Creek, on 185 Berry Street, Sergeant Ma will be led by Executive Chef and Partner Jason Halverson. The restaurant will showcase what the team describes as California cuisine rooted in Asian tradition, drawing on seasonal Northern California ingredients and flavors inspired by Halverson’s heritage.

The concept carries a deeply personal story. Sergeant Ma is named in honor of Halverson’s mother, a Vietnamese immigrant whose passion for cooking and generous hospitality shaped his approach to food. Rather than centering on a single regional cuisine, the menu will blend Asian flavors, techniques, and traditions with local seafood and produce.

Designed by architect Cass Calder Smith, the restaurant will feature expansive indoor and outdoor dining areas, floor-to-ceiling windows, private dining rooms, lounge seating, waterfront fire pits, and panoramic views of Mission Creek.

In addition to Sergeant Ma, Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group will operate Waters Edge, an adjacent daytime café and community workspace serving coffee, breakfast, and casual lunch fare.
