A new community-focused arcade is headed to San Francisco’s Excelsior neighborhood. Small Change Arcade is preparing to open at 4740 Mission Street, as one of the businesses selected to receive funding through the City of San Francisco’s Storefront Opportunity Grant program. The initiative helps entrepreneurs activate vacant commercial spaces while strengthening neighborhood business corridors.
Founded as a nonprofit, Small Change Arcade brings a different take on the traditional arcade by combining classic games with community programming. The organization offers affordable entertainment while creating a welcoming gathering space that hosts tournaments, workshops, educational events, and youth-focused activities.
On its website, Small Change Arcade describes itself as a creator of handcrafted miniature arcade cabinets that faithfully recreate the experience of classic coin-operated games. Built in San Francisco’s Haight neighborhood, each machine is meticulously scaled to match the original cabinet and runs on licensed original circuit boards instead of emulators or multi-game systems. The company also uses custom-built or hard-to-source CRT monitors, delivering the authentic visuals and gameplay that defined the golden age of arcades.
The Mission Street location will provide residents with a place to play vintage and modern arcade games while supporting the organization’s broader mission to foster connection through gaming and accessible public spaces.
