Coming from a long line of tobacconists, Luis Molina is bringing a new chapter of his family’s tradition to the Garden District with the upcoming opening of a Casa Molina flagship location at 1716 St. Charles Ave.

The two-story maison will serve as a showcase for the Molina family’s deep roots in the tobacco industry, and offer a specialized, brand-focused experience for the Baton Rouge-based cigar importer. The new location aims to open its doors in early October, just in time for the peak of football season.

“Casa Molina is a separate entity that imports our other brands,” Molina explained. “We source cigars made for us by partner factories in the Dominican Republic, but we also aim to have our own cigar-rolling premises.”

Visitors to the flagship can expect a front-row seat to the craft, with on-site rollers assembling high-end cigars. The shop will feature the family’s proprietary blends, including blends made with tobacco grown in Saint James Parish. There will also be a new location-exclusive cigar brand called Boeuf Gras. The name refers to the tradition of a “fattened cow” being paraded before the Lenten season begins.

“It’s a tribute to the old Carnival tradition of the last red meat before Lent,” Molina explained. “So, it’ll be kind of catering to the local history and Carnival tradition, especially since we’re on the parade route.”

Beyond the retail floor, the building will offer a smoking lounge and a second-floor private suite designed for hospitality and hosting international retailers. Molina hopes the space will serve as both a destination for aficionados and an educational hub for those curious about the niche industry.

The upcoming lounge will also have two very notable outside features: an off-street parking lot and close proximity to the Avenue Pub.

“People can bring in drinks from Avenue Pub,” Molina said. “I don’t mind the on-site consumption since we don’t have a permit to sell alcohol.”
