A dream built around coffee, fresh-baked goods and family is getting a permanent home in Bunnell as The Haggard Hare prepares to open its first cafe.
The new cafe is planned for 3351 N. State Street, Unit 1, in Bunnell, along US-1.
Haggard Hare is founded by a couple that has been creating this business through pop-up stands, weekly deliveries and special holiday items. The next step in the development of the business is opening an independent brick-and-mortar space.
The concept of the cafe is simple, providing people with the opportunity to have a delicious meal and spend some time there.
This planned venue is going to be child-friendly, with a children’s section, a section for a library and workspace. The owners plan to turn it into a venue that families could come to, where people can do their work, and where clients could spend time drinking coffee and eating a homemade dish.
The menu is going to incorporate the things that the business had already been doing, such as homemade products and pizza.
The menu will build on what the business has already been offering through its pop-ups and special orders, including fresh-baked goods and pizza. Having a permanent space will also allow The Haggard Hare to serve coffee on a regular basis.
There is a personal story behind the name, too. The family’s last name is Haire, making The Haggard Hare a playful fit for a business created by a couple who have built their lives and family together while working in the hospitality industry.
The couple is now raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign as they work toward getting the cafe ready. The campaign is intended to help with some of the equipment and startup costs needed for the space, including an oven, kitchen equipment and coffee-bar essentials.
But the fundraising page also gives a glimpse into the bigger goal behind the business. After building The Haggard Hare slowly through pop-ups and orders, the couple is looking to create a permanent place where people can connect and feel at home.
The cafe is meant to be more than somewhere to pick up a coffee or pastry. The owners want it to become part of the community, a place where families can spend time together, friends can meet and customers can return often.
For those who want to follow the journey or support the cafe’s opening, the couple’s GoFundMe page offers more information about the project and its progress.
An official opening date has not yet been announced.
