H Mart is opening its first Sacramento-area store at 6366 Mack Rd, taking over a 58,000-square-foot space in Valley Mack Plaza that was once home to a Food Source grocery. A permanent sign has now gone up on the building’s front, replacing the temporary “coming soon” banner that had marked the site since the project was first announced.

The New Jersey-based Korean grocery chain is the largest Asian supermarket chain in the United States, with more than 90 stores nationwide and a growing California footprint that already includes locations in San Francisco, San Jose and Dublin. H Mart President Brian Kwon has said the Sacramento location will carry over the brand’s past California successes, calling it the newest food lover destination for the region. Alongside its full grocery lineup, the store is planned to include a food hall featuring vendors like Paris Baguette, Gong Cha, Paik’s Noodles and Oh! K-Dog.

According the Sacramento Bee, city officials say the opening has taken longer than expected due to the renovation process and building inspections, though a firm date still hasn’t been confirmed. H Mart representatives have not responded to recent requests for comment. Once open, H Mart will give South Sacramento its own dedicated Asian grocery destination, joining nearby options like 99 Ranch Market and KP International Market in Rancho Cordova.
