A fast-growing dirty soda concept is expanding into the Greater Boston market.

Swig, the Utah-based beverage franchise and “Home of the Original Dirty Soda®,” has signed a multi-unit agreement with Athena Franchise Group to open six locations throughout the Greater Boston area. According to a press release, the first location is expected to open in early 2027, although exact addresses have not yet been announced.

Ryan Nolan, a partner with Athena Franchise Group, is leading Swig’s expansion into the market. Nolan brings more than 12 years of restaurant industry experience to the project, having started his career as a crew member before working his way into franchise ownership.

“Swig has built a brand that’s unlike anything else in the beverage industry,” said Nolan in a statement. “Its ability to combine customization, convenience, and genuine community connection creates a guest experience that stands apart. Bringing that experience to the Greater Boston market represents an incredible opportunity, and I look forward to introducing more people to what makes the brand so unique.”

For those unfamiliar, a dirty soda is a fountain soda mixed with flavored syrups, creams, fruit purées, and other mix-ins. Swig offers more than 40 customizable combinations, ranging from fruity and refreshing to sweet and creamy. Beyond its signature sodas, the menu also includes energy drinks, refreshers, pretzel bites, and sweet treats like cookies and hot chocolate.

Founded in 2010 in St. George, Utah, Swig has grown from a single drive-thru location into a national brand with more than 150 locations spanning 16 states. Much of the concept’s appeal lies in its quick-service format and emphasis on personalization, letting customers mix and match flavors to create drinks tailored to their tastes.

“Ryan has demonstrated an impressive ability to grow restaurant concepts while building meaningful relationships within the communities he serves,” explained Alex Dunn, CEO of Swig. “He understands what it takes to scale a brand without compromising the guest experience, making him an outstanding addition to the Swig franchise family. We look forward to supporting his growth as he establishes Swig throughout the Greater Boston market.”

Swig’s drive-thru-focused format allows the brand to operate in relatively small spaces. Locations can occupy as little as approximately 800 to 850 square feet and require no complex kitchen infrastructure, helping franchisees streamline operations and keep build-out costs comparatively low.

Swig is actively seeking qualified multi-unit franchise operators as it expands across the country. According to the company, ideal partners have experience in restaurant operations and are prepared to grow the brand while maintaining a strong focus on the customer experience.

“We’re continuing to see strong interest from experienced multi-unit operators who recognize Swig’s long-term growth potential,” said Todd Smith, President of Swig. “Boston represents an outstanding opportunity for our brand, and Ryan’s operational expertise and entrepreneurial mindset make him well-positioned to establish Swig throughout the market while creating lasting connections with the communities he serves.”
