Barretts Travel Center, a new travel center with a fueling station, convenience store, restaurant, bar, and community center, is nearing opening in Jamul along State Route 94 near Jefferson Road.
The Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation is developing the project, and it has submitted a liquor license application for the restaurant and bar component. Construction is currently underway, although an exact completion or opening date has not been announced. According to a press release from the Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation, the restaurant and bar will offer full bar service and an outside lounge.
Barretts Travel Center is being built on the Jamul Indian Village reservation and will serve travelers along State Route 94, also known as Campo Road. The 14,520-square-foot development represents the tribe’s first travel center or convenience store, according to a spokesperson cited by Tribal Business News. Dempsey Construction is handling the project.
“Barretts Travel Center reflects our Tribe’s commitment to economic self-sufficiency, job creation, and providing meaningful spaces that serve both our community and the broader region,” Pinto said in the original news release. “By combining modern infrastructure with cultural preservation and community-focused design, Barretts Travel Center sets a new standard for development that balances growth with purpose,” Pinto continued.
The development will include 16 regular fuel pumps, 10 RV and truck fuel pumps, and five electric vehicle charging stations. Plans also call for a full-service general store, a sit-down restaurant with outdoor recreation space, additional retail space, and a community center. The project is expected to create more than 100 jobs, according to information provided by the tribe.
The project also includes restoring the historic Barrett House, a local landmark along the SR 94 frontage at Jefferson Road. The restored structure will be incorporated into the Travel Center as part of the development. The Jamul Indian Village Development Corporation has said the project is intended to expand its non-gaming business portfolio and provide additional services for local residents and regional travelers.
The restaurant and bar will be one of the main components of Barretts Travel Center, with the liquor license application adding another step toward its eventual opening. The convenience store will offer fresh food, essential goods, and locally curated products. The tribe has not yet announced a timeline for completion or a grand opening.
