Leica Camera has its sights on Texas! The renowned German camera and optics company is set to open its first Texas location in Houston next year. Leica will debut in the River Oaks District at 4444 Westheimer Road in 2027, according to a press release from the team behind the brand.
“Houston is one of America’s most dynamic cultural centers, with a vibrant arts community and an entrepreneurial spirit that makes it a natural home for Leica,” Mike Giannattasio, President, Leica Camera North America, said in the press release.
“We look forward to creating a space that not only showcases our products but also brings together photographers, artists, and creators.”
What Now Houston reached out to Giannattasio to find out more about the exciting new expansion. Unfortunately, we did not hear back by the time of this publication.
“As Leica continues to expand its global retail network, the Houston Store and Gallery represents a milestone in the brand’s North American growth strategy,” the press release further details.
“Home to world-class arts institutions, a celebrated photography festival and a community of artists and cultural organizations, Houston offers an ideal environment for Leica’s next creative destination. Situated within River Oaks District next to Le Colonial, the new store will serve as a gathering place for photographers, artists, collectors, and visual storytellers.”
And what a perfect product and company to provide such a space.
Leica revolutionized photography by introducing the first commercially successful 35 mm roll-film camera, transforming bulky equipment into portable devices. Founded as an optical institute by Carl Kellner and taken over by Ernst Leitz in 1869, Leica cameras were historically sold through independent specialty retailers and dedicated local distributors rather than brand-owned flagships. Independent shops like Photo Visuals in Minneapolis pioneered the “Leica-only” retail concept before official corporate stores existed.
Leica opened its first branded retail space in Paris in 2006 to combine product sales with galleries, workshops, and community gathering spaces. Since then, the company has expanded to more than 120 Leica Stores internationally, alongside 26 Leica Galleries worldwide.

The Store and Gallery will offer Leica’s complete portfolio of products, including the iconic M-System, SL-System, and Q cameras, lenses, timepieces, and home cinema products.
Additional details regarding the store opening, events, and programming will be announced closer to the 2027 opening.
