A landmark restaurant located in Washington, DC, Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant has confirmed its closure. The restaurant will serve its final meal next month after nearly three decades in business.

Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant Prepares for Farewell

Operated by Hiwot Gebru, Yodit Tefera, and Lydia Tefera, Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant began as a small carryout and market. The restaurant built its reputation with its vibrant dining experience and traditional Ethiopian flavors.

The menu offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Popular items include Dukem Special Tibs, Awaze Tibs, and Lamb Tibs.

The restaurant owners shared the official closure announcement on social media and on the restaurant website. According to the announcement, the restaurant will serve its final customers on November 7 after 29 years in business.

In the post, the owners thanked the community, customers, and employees for their support. The post noted, “We are grateful. For every meal shared, celebration, late night upstairs, first taste of Ethiopian food, familiar face and family who returned generation after generation.”

Dukem Has Operated on U Street Since 1997

The restaurant first opened its doors in 1997, and over the years of service, Dukem became a staple dining destination for the community. It has received multiple accolades, including recognition from Eater as one of the best Ethiopian restaurants in DC.

Tefera Zewdie, who previously owned the restaurant, died in 2022. After Zewdie’s death, his children continued operating the restaurant, according to the Hoodline.

In the closure announcement post, the restaurant team said, “This decision was not made lightly. Anyone who knew our father, Tefera, knew he was always thinking ten steps ahead.”

“His vision was always bigger than one restaurant. Before he passed, much of his focus had turned toward Ethiopia and projects close to his heart, including the Yoly Building and hotel,” said the team.

As the restaurant prepares for its final month of service, it encourages customers to visit the restaurant and enjoy one more meal.
