Johan Engman, founder and CEO of Rise & Shine Hospitality Group, began his restaurant career as a dishwasher after moving from Sweden to San Diego at age 16. He opened his first Fig Tree Cafe location in 2008 before launching Breakfast Republic in North Park in 2015. The breakfast concept has since expanded across San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles, alongside other Rise & Shine brands including Eggies, Feast & Fareway and Breakfast Company. Engman also founded Sunny Side Accounting and OX Coffee, which support the group’s hospitality operations.
Breakfast Republic serves breakfast and brunch built around American classics with variations on familiar dishes. According to the company’s website, the menu includes items such as Oreo Pancakes, Shrimp & Grits and S’mores French Toast.
The restaurant also offers beverages including coffee, specialty lattes, fresh-squeezed orange juice and other breakfast drinks. Its broader beverage program includes mimosas, Bloody Marys, cocktails, local craft beer and kombucha, according to the company’s menu information.
