A good neighborhood gathering spot can be about more than what’s in the cup. For Rajni Posner, the idea behind Mosaic Chai House is to create a place where people can meet, spend time together and build connections that extend beyond the cafe’s walls.
The upcoming Chai House is planned for 4900 W. 46th Avenue in Denver’s Berkeley neighborhood, directly across from Berkeley Lake Park and Scheitler Recreation Center. The business is targeting an early January 2027 opening.
Posner is deliberate about how she describes the concept. Rather than calling it simply a cafe or restaurant, she wants people to know it as a Chai House – a neighborhood gathering place where people of different ages and backgrounds can feel comfortable spending time.
“It is a true neighborhood gathering spot, a third place where people can come together intentionally to connect, meet friends, neighbors,” Posner told WhatNow Media.
Her vision extends beyond serving chai and coffee. The space is being planned as a family-friendly destination with activities and programming that give people a reason to return, whether they want to meet a friend, spend an afternoon with family or take part in a community event.
Planned activities include board game nights, live music and puzzle nights. Visitors can also expect vintage clothing and an assortment of distinctive finds, adding another element to the experience. But for Posner, the heart of the concept is how people feel when they walk through the door.
“More than anything, it should be a welcoming, warm, inviting, inclusive space,” she said.
That philosophy is also reflected in the business’s name. Posner sees Mosaic Chai House as a place where people with different backgrounds, experiences and identities can come together, much like the individual pieces of a mosaic forming a larger picture.
“It’s a place of people of all different shapes, sizes, backgrounds, ages, ethnic backgrounds, you name it, identities that can come together, and it’s more beautiful together,” Posner said. She sees community as the element that brings those different pieces together. “And then what grouts us together is community,” she added.
The location across from Berkeley Lake Park and Scheitler Recreation Center is an important part of that vision. Posner hopes families, children and other visitors using the area’s amenities, including the tennis courts and recreation facilities, will be able to stop by afterward and continue their conversations over a drink or a snack.
Alongside chai and coffee, the planned offerings include beer and wine, giving visitors options for different occasions and times of day. The idea is to make Mosaic a natural extension of the neighborhood’s existing gathering places, somewhere people can move from an afternoon outdoors to a relaxed conversation with friends or neighbors.
With its combination of drinks, snacks, vintage clothing and community programming, Mosaic Chai House is being developed around the idea that a neighborhood business can offer more than a transaction. Posner wants it to be a place where people feel welcome to stay awhile.
