After 37 years of service, El Padrino, an iconic Oak Cliff Mexican restaurant, is preparing to close. The location is expected to remain open through December 2026. Changes in property ownership, area development, and lease issues led to the restaurant’s permanent closure.
Oak Cliff’s El Padrino to Close
The restaurant is well-known for serving authentic Mexican street food and a vibrant, lively atmosphere. Founded in 1989, the restaurant has built a strong following in the community with its flavor and warm hospitality.
Located on Jefferson Boulevard, El Padrino is marking the end of over three decades of service in the Oak Cliff community in Dallas.
Juan Contreras, the owner’s son, shared the closure news in an Instagram post. He wrote, “The Oak Cliff location will keep operating through the end of the year, unless something changes before then.”
Reflecting on the journey of the restaurant, Contreras added that the restaurant is his father’s dream. Contreras thanked the Oak Cliff community and encouraged them to visit the restaurant.
He wrote, “Come eat, order out, and share this post. Every visit means a lot to my dad right now.”

Reason Behind the Closure
According to a CultureMap, the building’s ownership recently changed, and the new property managers do not plan to renew the restaurant’s lease.
In the closure announcement post, Contreras shared, “With Bishop Arts and all the development interest around it, something was bound to happen eventually.” He added, “After a change in property management, we were given until the end of the year.”
In the post, he highlighted, “Elected officials and interest groups sell you a beautiful picture of what a neighborhood can become. What they leave out is that the people who stayed and kept these neighborhoods alive when nobody else wanted them are usually the ones priced out or pushed aside for “better” tenants.”
While the Oak Cliff location is closing, Contreras mentioned that the second location of the restaurant in Pleasant Grove will remain open. The owners are also looking for a new space in the Oak Cliff neighborhood to relocate.
