A Boxborough-based artisan chocolate shop known for its handcrafted confections and specialty drinks is expanding to Concord.
Two Friends Chocolates is preparing to open a new outpost at 1137 Main Street, co-owners Lala Selvaraj and Neethu Viswanath announced this week on Instagram. “So we have news. Big news,” the duo shared. “We are absolutely thrilled, a little emotional and full of nerves to announce that we are opening a brand-new second location in Concord, MA.”
The idea for Two Friends Chocolates took shape during the founders’ university days in Scotland. Selvaraj and Viswanath had traveled from India to pursue graduate studies in bioengineering, and while living there, they discovered a shared love of rich, dark chocolate truffles.
Years later, after their paths led them to different countries—Selvaraj to the United States and Viswanath to Canada—Selvaraj made a batch of chocolates for her friend’s birthday. The homemade treat was so special that the two decided to turn their mutual passion into a business and share their love of chocolate with the world, according to an earlier report from The Acton Exchange.
What began as a home-based studio has since grown into a business with two thriving locations in Markham, Ontario, and Boxborough, Massachusetts. The company specializes in small-batch chocolates inspired by the founders’ Indian roots, their experiences in New England and Canada, and their travels around the world.
At the heart of the shop’s offerings are its handcrafted chocolate truffles, available in boxes of six, nine, 12, or 24. Flavors include Sambuca, which pairs dark chocolate and sweet cream with notes of fennel and other herbs; Elderflower Liqueur, which lends a floral sweetness to the classic dark chocolate truffle; and Scotch, which adds smoky, rich notes of authentic Scotch whisky to the dark chocolate.
Beyond truffles, the shop sells hand-wrapped chocolate bars and chocolate thins. The Boxborough location also serves a variety of beverages, including hot and iced drinking chocolate, cocoa tea, chai, coffee, and real fruit “sparklers”.
Although the owners could not be reached by the time of publication, they shared in the comments of their announcement that the Concord shop will serve as a cozy “Chocolate Room,” offering signature drinks, limited seating, and possibly a few special surprises. The team will continue crafting its chocolates in Boxborough, with the new space providing a place for customers to enjoy their treats in-store.
“Concord may be just a 12 min drive away, but this journey has taken us 6 years, long nights and many dreams. Here’s hoping the next chapter is just as great as the current one,” the friends continued. “Wish us luck, and do stand by us again as we enter Concord ❤️”
An opening date and hours of operation have not yet been announced. For now, chocolate lovers can visit the Boxborough location at 629 Massachusetts Avenue, which is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday until 5 p.m.
