A Japanese retailer known for its minimalist designs and practical everyday essentials is adding another stop to its Greater Boston shopping lineup.
MUJI is preparing to open its third local store in The Shops at Chestnut Hill at 199 Boylston Street later this fall, according to a recent Instagram update from Bret Clancy. The shopping center’s website and the store’s Google Business page also indicate the upcoming opening, though an official debut date has not yet been announced.
Founded in Japan in 1980, MUJI takes its name from the phrase Mujirushi Ryohin, which loosely translates to “No-Brand Quality Goods.” The brand emphasizes simplicity, affordability, and functionality, with a focus on well-designed products for everyday use.
Today, MUJI operates more than 1,400 stores worldwide, with two existing Greater Boston locations in Cambridge’s Harvard Square and on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay. The upcoming Chestnut Hill shop will mark the brand’s third location in the area.
MUJI offers more than 7,000 products, including clothing, bedding, kitchenware, travel accessories, stationery, and modular furniture. Neutral colors, clean lines, and practical details are hallmarks of the brand, with products designed to fit seamlessly into daily life. Beyond retail, MUJI’s global portfolio also includes select cafes and prefabricated homes.
“There is a magic in something that is an everyday, utilitarian object that is just right and perfectly designed for its exact purpose — no more, no less, but just enough. That feeling of magic is MUJI,” reads the store’s description on The Shops at Chestnut Hill website.
What Now Boston has reached out to MUJI representatives for additional details about the upcoming Chestnut Hill location and will share updates, including an official opening date, as they become available.
