Bamboo Chinese Restaurant is opening at 138 W. Central Ave. in Sutherlin, with the owner expecting to open in January. Owner Qiongci Chi confirmed to What Now Portland that the restaurant is not opening before then.

“Not until maybe January,” she said.

The restaurant has applied to the Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission for a liquor license, which would allow it to serve alcohol with meals. The business plans to serve Chinese cuisine in downtown Sutherlin.

The restaurant is on West Central Avenue, the city’s main commercial street, down the road from the historic Sutherlin Bank Building. The surrounding area is known for its outdoor attractions. Cooper Creek Reservoir, the Umpqua River, a golf course and several vineyards are all nearby, so the restaurant can draw both locals and visitors.

Sutherlin is a Douglas County city of about 8,500 residents, the second most populous in the county. It sits just off Interstate 5, which brings in travelers heading north and south through the Umpqua Valley. The city, which incorporated in 1911, is nicknamed the “City of Flags.”
