An upcoming smoothie shop opening near the end of the year in downtown Lafayette is aiming to bring something different to the area by offering wellness-focused drinks, while creating an interactive community experience.
Founded by local music engineer and artist Adam LaFleur, Yumz was born out of a desire to make nutrient-dense food accessible while introducing unique ingredients to the city. After spending years working in a studio in downtown Lafayette, LaFleur decided to launch a nearby cafe centered around cold-pressed juices, organic smoothies, and wellness shots.
“I’m really obsessed with health and trying to educate people on ingredients and especially in Louisiana, because, you know, our diet is pretty horrible,” LaFleur said.
Rather than relying on standard smoothie shortcuts, Yumz plans to emphasize whole organic produce and superfood additions. LaFleur noted that the shop will steer clear of artificial syrups or heavy powders, choosing instead to sweeten drinks naturally with fresh fruit while sourcing ingredients locally whenever possible.
“My main goal is to offer clean, unique ingredients that people really don’t see very often, whether it’s something like bee pollen or hemp seed,” LaFleur explained. “These are different ways to get antioxidants that are really good for your body, instead of fillers and sugars.”
In addition to its daily beverage menu, Yumz aims to operate as a vibrant social lounge. Plans for the space include hosting evening social events such as trivia nights. LaFleur also plans to coordinate nearby fresh markets featuring both tropical fruits and local produce.
Central to LaFleur’s strategy is building the business directly alongside his future customer base. Throughout the build-out process, which is expected to wrap up in December, he has been sharing progress updates online and actively inviting input on menu development.
“I want to ask people, ‘What do you suggest? What do you want to see on the menu?'” LaFleur said. “I’m open to all suggestions and want to be in an interactive relationship with our audience.”
