Raku Ramen closed its West Midtown doors December 12 to make way for a planned 180-unit student housing mixed-use development, Eater Atlanta earlier this week first reported.
What Now Atlanta (WNA) confirmed the news Thursday on a visit to the restaurant space, at 810 Marietta Street NW.
“Raku Atlanta closed on December 12, 2017, due to a development being constructed on Marietta Street,” according to signage WNA found posted to the shuttered restaurant’s front door.
Raku Ramen’s owners have plans to open a new concept—Tina’s Sushi and Ramen—in March 2018 in the nearby M Street Apartments, at 944 Marietta Street, the signage notes.
The low-rise building where the ramen joint was situated will be demolished to make way for the new development.
Businesses at 800, 806, 808, and 818 Marietta Street, N.W., have also relocated or closed in preparation for the demolition.
Peak Campus, the company developing the new student housing project, late-2017 filed several permit applications with the City of Atlanta for the demolition, land development, and construction of the student housing development.
The developer in March had the two-acre site rezoned from an L-1 (Light Industrial) District to MRC-3 (Mixed Residential Commercial – Sector 3) District.
In addition to the apartments, the yet-to-be-named development will include 10,000 square feet of retail.
Construction on the project is set to begin in January.
Peak Campus and the owners of Raku Ramen were not immediately available for comment.

Why in the above story did this development file permits with Fulton County when the City of Atlanta has jurisdiction over what happens in the city? Fulton County is a completely separate government.
