When Pier 1 Imports closes later this year in Ansley Mall, the space currently housing the home furnishings retailer will quickly be taken over by Richard’s Variety Store, Owner Dr. Ming “Ya Ya” Yang confirmed with What Now Atlanta (WNA) over the phone Tuesday afternoon.
“We just confirmed it today and we expect to be open by May 1,” Yang said.
The new Richard’s Variety Store is a relocation of its open Midtown Promenade outpost down the street which, in mid-2020, is set to close its doors.
Representatives for the retailer known for its overwhelming selection of “products that are hard to find” were seen in recent days scouting and measuring areas of its soon-to-be-home, a Pier 1 management associate told (WNA) over the phone Tuesday.
Pier 1 is set to vacate by the end of February, around the same time as its Buckhead counterpart.

I grew up on Richard’s Five & Dime when it was at P’tree Battle Shopping Center. Browsing inside the toy corner with all kinds of toys and kids’ books, classic board games and of course, the toy horse for a 25 cent ride…that in itself was an institution! While my mom went to the A&P for shopping, I went straight to Richard’s to find all kinds of novelty items and toys without breaking my piggy bank or my parents’ wallet! My parents also found some interesting and hard to find stuff there too including a few hardware items and other odds & ends for the house. I also liked reading some of the books that featured all kinds of activities, including puzzles, card games long before DVDs were invented. We bought several of these during our travels and as for me I learned a lot from them too! If I had children of my own, this would be one spot I’d bring them so as to create wonderful memories of their own! Keep up the great work, folks!
