Located in downtown Austin, Rote Shaq offers Indian fusion dishes. Some highlights at Rote Shaq are dosa tacos, paneer tikka flatbread pizza, and potato masala rice bowl.
However, on July 30, Austin Public Health observed violations of Texas food establishment rules at the restaurant. Based on the nature of violations, the on-site inspector ordered a temporary shutdown of food service operations.
Rote Shaq didn’t have a designated PIC during the operating hours. Its employees lacked knowledge of how to deal with vomiting or diarrheal events. Written procedures were not available at the restaurant for handling such incidents. Additionally, the restaurant didn’t stop its staff from eating, drinking, and smoking in areas with exposed food and equipment.
The on-site inspector noted that Rote Shaq’s handwashing sink didn’t maintain a minimum temperature of 100°F for hot water. Improper storage of damaged and spoiled food was also observed. Dirty food-contact surfaces and utensils were being used at the eatery.
The health officer further reported missing date marks on prepared foods that were held for more than 24 hours. Rote Shaq was found to be using an unapproved tracking powder.
The Indian fusion establishment was cited for failing to remove live and dead German roaches. Many food items were uncovered and exposed to contamination at Rote Shaq. Nonfood-contact surfaces that could not be properly cleaned were also noted.
Follow-Up Inspection
The inspection report by Austin Public Health states that a reinspection will be carried out at Rote Shaq on August 1. This would primarily be for the presence of German roaches throughout the restaurant.
The inspection findings serve as a reminder for food establishments to remain in compliance with Texas food establishment rules and other regulations as mandated by the department.
