An outdoorsy new coffee shop (and beer spot) is preparing to open at 220 Ralph Ablanedo Drive, Suite 110, in Austin. Called Switchback Coffee and Beer, its name will be immediately clear to any hiker. A switchback is a 180° bend in a path, and it’s appropriate for a brand nodding to exercise and the outdoors.
But still more fittingly, as co-owner Ethan Wagner, who is opening Switchback in partnership with Grace Nichols, summed it up in conversation with What Now on Friday, Switchback is a place where “you can come in early, get your coffee, and then you can switch back over for a beer.”
The menu at Switchback Coffee and Beer will feature coffee and beer, naturally, along with ciders, matcha drinks, and some not-too-strong cocktails. There will also be pastries and other snacks.
“It’ll be a typical coffee shop, but inside we’re going to have a lot of natural colors, tan, green, in terra cotta, with plants and a lot of windows. My wife and I are very outdoorsy. We do a lot of running, climbing, and camping, and we decided to move forward with a coffee and beer concept that would make a nod to that. It’s a nice, open area, very inviting and laid back.”
There will also be a courtyard complete with disc golf baskets. Taken together, the courtyard and the interior, which should seat between 40 and 50 guests, provide plenty of room for people to gather together.
“We’re just excited to get open and become a community hub for people to enjoy and lay back, work, hang out, and meet up,” Wagner said.
And we’re excited to see it!
