REI Co-op will close its Boston store next month, reducing its number of East Coast locations. The outdoor recreation retailer is preparing for the closure after more than two decades of operations. Customers have until July 29, 2026, to place their final online orders.

REI Co-op to Close Boston Store in August

According to an official website, REI Co-op will close its store at 401 Park Dr, Ste 103 on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The retail company thanked the Boston community for their support through the last 23 years. The company did not provide a reason for the closure in its notice.

Customers can place online orders for in-store pickup at the Boston location through July 29, 2026. The store will remain open until August 13, allowing customers to pick up existing orders and any bikes, skis, or snowboards awaiting collection before the location permanently shutters.

According to Boston.com, once the Boston shop closes, the nearest stores of the retail company will be in Reading, Hingham, and Framingham.

REI Adjusts East Coast Retail Footprint

The Boston closure is a part of REI Co-op’s broader plans to reduce its East Coast store count.

According to Fortune, REI announced plans to close three locations in 2026. This included a flagship store in SoHo, NY, the current Boston outlet, and its Paramus, New Jersey, store.

The company said it evaluates stores as leases approach renewal and exits locations that no longer meet its operational and financial goals.

REI Co-op gears up to shut down the SoHo location on July 23, 2026. The permanent closure comes after the outdoor recreation outlet’s 15 years in business.

Prior to this, the retail company had closed an experimental outlet in Cambridge on April 3, 2026, according to Boston.com.

Founded in 1938, REI Co-op is a leading U.S. outdoor retailer known for its selection of equipment, apparel, and services for outdoor activities. With a nationwide store network and decades of operations, the company remains a major name in the outdoor recreation retail industry.

The Boston closure adds to this series of planned store exits as the outdoor retailer continues to evaluate its brick-and-mortar footprint.
