A new Calabash-style seafood restaurant is making a splash in Myrtle Beach with its signature fried fare and coastal flavors.

Rafik Hakobyan will open Captain Nemo’s Calabash Seafood at 2900 N. Kings Hwy., taking over the former Bennett’s Calabash Seafood location.

“It’s an owner change. The main style is remaining; it’s still a Calabash seafood buffet,” Hakobyan told What Now Charleston.

Calabash-style seafood originates from Calabash, North Carolina, and is known for its light, crispy fried coating.

“We are frying different types of seafood like shrimp, scallops, oysters and some fish. Most fish you can fry, but not all fish,” he said. “All the places that are named Calabash in Myrtle Beach, they all do breading differently–the bread that comes on the seafood. I believe our breading will be very nice.”

Hakobyan said they are giving the interior a fresh, updated look.

“We decided to do a little renovation inside and it will be much newer, much cleaner and much more spacious than it was before. There are some nice features being added to the place to make the environment more enjoyable for customers. In the future, a bar will be added,” he said.

Hakobyan is eager to revive the excitement around the fried seafood.

“We are looking forward to serving our customers the best we can, bringing that location to its previous heights. It used to be one the busiest spots in Myrtle Beach,” he said.

Captain Nemo’s Calabash Seafood will officially open at the end of February.
