A neighborhood seafood eatery in downtown Charleston is about to stretch its fins.

According to recent permits filed with the city, Chubby Fish is expanding from its current cozy spot at 252 Coming St into the neighboring space at 254 Coming St.

Founded in 2018 by Chef James London and his wife, Yoanna, Chubby Fish offers a variety of upscale seafood dishes including the Caviar Sammich’, Cauliflower Cacio e Pepe, Triggerfish Tempura, Rainbow Trout, and Chili Garlic Shrimp.

A Charleston native and graduate of New York City’s French Culinary Institute, London honed his craft at some of the city’s most celebrated eateries before returning home.

Although the chef has not yet responded to inquiries from What Now Charleston, permit details—including phrases like “Seahorse courtyard”—suggest the new space may draw inspiration from seahorses. Plans reveal a charming courtyard with wood siding, plants, and metal planters.

A recent Facebook post from Chubby Fish subtly hints at the theme, showcasing a seahorse logo while announcing job openings: “👋 Know any passionate bartenders and barbacks? 🍸✨ We’ve got an exciting new project in the works, and we’d love to meet talented people to join our team! 👀

Stay tuned for updates on this underwater-inspired expansion.
