A Columbia-based restaurant is expanding to downtown Charleston.

El Vago Mexican Kitchen plans to open its new location at a yet-to-be-disclosed address, confirms the restaurant’s Instagram bio. This announcement follows news that a new Greenville site is slated to debut in March 2025.

Founded earlier this year by Jonathan Sanchez and his wife/business partner Sonia Barillas, El Vago specializes in traditional Mexican cuisine with a modern twist, complemented by a beverage menu centered around tequila and mezcal.

A recent post from 212 Motors—Sanchez’s other business—shared in a Charleston job board Facebook group indicates that the El Vago team is hiring a manager for both the Charleston and Greenville locations. Interested applicants are encouraged to call 704-419-1022.

Sanchez told What Now Charleston that he plans to launch the downtown Charleston El Vago in late 2025 or early 2026.
