A New York-based bar, known for its tagline ‘Be well. Feel well. Tip well. Farewell,’ is set to open its first location in Charleston this spring.
Mother’s Ruin is set to open at 474 King St., taking over the former Rarebit space. Founding partner T.J. Lynch acquired Rarebit in December, restaurant broker Mike Santos of The Commonwealth Company told What Now Charleston.
The bar launched in New York City in 2011 and has since expanded to Nashville, Chicago and Austin. The Charleston location will be the latest addition to its growing footprint, according to the website.
Mother’s Ruin serves brunch until 3 p.m., featuring classics like breakfast burritos, sandwiches and avocado toast, alongside its signature spicy chicken and waffles with Cholula honey butter, scallion crema, shredded slaw and lime.

The bar also offers an all-day menu until 1:30 a.m., spotlighting the Mother’s Smash Burger, crispy chicken sandwich, French onion grilled cheese, Old Bay waffle fries and Thai Brussels sprouts.
Known as a mix of a beloved dive bar and craft cocktail spot, Mother’s Ruin serves beer, wine and signature drinks. Standouts include the “Girth, Wind and Fire” with tequila, hibiscus, grapefruit, lime and soda; the “Surprise Vows” with gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and lemongrass; and the “Frozen Slushy” with whiskey, pomegranate, citrus and pineapple.
Ahead of its grand opening, Mother’s Ruin will host a series of pop-ups in Charleston, kicking off on Feb. 5 at The Faculty Lounge from 7 p.m. to midnight.
