Sabatino’s Authentic New York City Pizza is expanding to a second location at 105 A Old Light Road in Summerville.

The downtown staple hopes to open this summer, maybe in June or July, and will serve beer, wine and New York-style pies, along with menu additions that are going to be different from their downtown flagship location, according to owner Sabatino Covollo

“At the downtown location it’s perfect for a slice shop. It’s 450 square feet, it’s like counter service,” Covollo said. “One reason why I’m so excited about [the new location] is because it lets me do the other side of my menu.”

The new menu will include fried calzones, fried jalapeño poppers, and a range of desserts and appetizers.

But Covollo told What Now Charleston there have been delays in the opening because the space needed more renovation and fixing-up than previously expected. The business also still has to complete several permits, buy equipment and hire new staff.

Covollo was born in the Bronx and started making pizza at 16 years old before moving his talents to Charleston in 2006.

“I wanted to create a place where the crust cracked just right, the cheese pulled the way it’s supposed to, and every bite brought you back to the streets of New York,” Covollo wrote on the company website.
