A South Carolina-founded convenience store chain continuing to expand is undergoing a leadership change, with its co-presidents set to take over as co-CEOs.

Refuel executives Travis Smith and Jon Rier will assume their new roles on July 1. Founder and current CEO Mark Jordan will become Chairman of the Board, the Post and Courier reported.

In a joint statement, Smith and Rier said, “We are incredibly grateful to Mark for his trust, mentorship, and vision in building Refuel into the industry leader it is today. We’re honored to step into the Co-CEO roles and continue working side-by-side with our talented team to grow this business. Our mission remains focused on serving our customers, delivering operational excellence, empowering our people, and building a company we’re all proud to be part of.”

According to the company’s website, Smith co-founded FR Refuel in 2018 and is credited with spearheading its acquisition-based growth strategy. Rier joined in 2019 and has led the finance, accounting and IT functions. Both were appointed co-presidents in January 2024.

“Their elevation to Co-CEOs reflects the confidence we all have in their abilities and their commitment to continuing to build an extraordinary company focused on providing customers fresh food, convenience, and fast and friendly service,” Jordan said in a statement.

What Now Charleston reached out to Refuel regarding the leadership change and any planned updates within the company but has not received a response.

Refuel has grown to more than 240 locations. What Now Charleston recently reported a new site is expected to open July 3 in Myrtle Beach’s Little River area on U.S. 17.
