The Charleston complex near West Ashley Greenway, home to Charleston Bicycle Co. and the former Carolina Rod and Gun at 1317 Hwy 17, is getting a facelift.
Arthur Lucas, owner of Freehouse Brewery in North Charleston, and David Miles, former owner of LimRic Plumbing, Heating and Air, have purchased the property, which will be called The Greenway, Lucas told What Now Charleston.
“Myself and another gentleman, who ran a successful HVAC business and sold that, we came together to purchase the building. He and I are both the landlords, but I will also be a tenant,” Lucas said.
He continued, “I’ve been going to the bike shop for years; I’m friends with them. They actually introduced me to David. When David and I met, it was pretty obvious that we held the same vision. I love this building. I love this location. I know exactly what needs to happen to it and have the opportunity to make it happen.”
Tenants will include the existing bicycle shop, a coffee shop, a healthy to-go eatery and Lucas’ new brewpub. While the coffee shop and healthy lifestyle spot have yet to be named, the brewpub will be called Freehouse Brewery at The Greenway, an offshoot of his flagship location.
“The bike shop is going to be moving down the building and out of that corner. Myself and the bike shop are going to share what used to be the old gun shop,” Lucas said.
The 2,000-square-foot brewpub will focus on classic pub fare like pizza and wings, along with a selection of beer and wine.
“I’m 90% sure it’s going to be New York-style pizza at this location. We’re still going to use our high-quality organic flour and dough. We’re probably going to have 16-inch pies and also have it by the slice,” Lucas said.
He continued, “I’m partnering with my current distributor, who sells fine wines. They’ve got a really good guy, who lives in the neighborhood, who’s going to help me stock a good selection. Just things I haven’t been able to do in my North Charleston location.”
Unlike his flagship location, which has more of an “open-air, lodge vibe,” The Greenway spot will be a small neighborhood pub, with plans to add a back deck.
Lucas is eager to create a one-stop destination where people can grab a coffee, a healthy bite or a beer–all in one spot.
“I’m most excited because I lived in the neighborhood for almost a decade. I know the Greenway well. The Greenway is now being connected to downtown on a pedestrian bridge over the river,” he said. “What we’re offering is finally going to provide an amenity for that path, and bring a lot of people out.”
Lucas said he and his team aim to have The Greenway complex open by December 2026. Stay tuned!
