Campo Taco Co. is heading to 1001 S Saunders St., joining the Rockway development in Raleigh this year, according to the restaurant’s website. The team is targeting an early fall opening.

The family-owned venture will come from the same team behind local Mexican restaurants like the North Carolina-based Monterrey Mexican Restaurants and Lobera Tacos & Tequila, according to the Triangle Business Journal.

Minerva Llamas, who is driving the development of the concept, told What Now Charlotte that the vision is a bright, welcoming space with authentic, fresh Mexican food and drinks. Customers can expect park-friendly and group-friendly foods, ranging from light bites to curated picnic packs.

“It’s in such a great location and I’m super excited to be joining the neighborhood. We really want to add to the community experience,” Llamas said.

The concept stems from Llamas’s love of the outdoors, and its menu and design will reflect that. “Campo” means “field” in Spanish, a nod to Llamas’s childhood summers in Mexico and memories of cookouts there.

“There are a lot of memories of shared moments with people and food and outdoors, and just feeling connected to the land, the environment and those around you while sharing your love for food,” Llamas said.

Llamas said the space will reflect a cozy Mexican design, with an emphasis placed on creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. There will also be a patio space, where she hopes to have community events and find ways to forge connections.

“We want to bring in the space, the community and doing good for others,” Llamas said.

The Rockway development, located between Dorothea Dix Park and Rocky Branch Creek, offers outdoor spaces as well as food and beverage and retail destinations. The multi-phase project is expected to add The Heath, which will feature 350 apartment homes and 5,000 square feet of retail space. The Row is already open, featuring apartments and 18,000 square feet of retail space.

BK Pilates is already open at the development, and Benchwarmers Bagels is expected to join the development soon.
