In addition to a spot at The Bowl at Ballantyne slated to open later this year, South Block will be bringing its smoothies, cold-pressed juices, acai bowls and toasts to Plaza Midwood later this fall, according to a release.

CEO Amir Mostafavi, who founded South Block in Virginia in 2011, told What Now Charlotte that he is excited to bring South Block to both of these shopping areas.

“Timing was just perfect as both of these projects were unfolding,” Mostafavi said in an email. “We love the other brands coming to these shopping centers and the excitement around these centers from the community.”

Currently, South Block has 20 locations across the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia market. This expansion into North Carolina is a major aspect of their growth plan.

“We’re thrilled to bring our fresh flavors and good vibes to new blocks around the country,” Mostafavi said in a release. “This is an exciting move for our brand, and North Carolina is the perfect beginning for our expansion. I have many friends from Virginia Tech who’ve made Charlotte their home, and it is an amazing city with an incredible vibe. Our mission is to help make people feel awesome — one block at a time — and we can’t wait to make this already incredible community even more awesome.”

The brand has been expanding rapidly, spearheaded in part by their partnership with the Savory Fund, a private equity firm that invests in emerging restaurant concepts. Since the partnership began in 2024, they have added four stores, and they have plans for five locations this year.

Mostafavi shared that this is just the beginning of their foray into the Charlotte market. They are already negotiating more locations in the area, and ultimately they hope to open at least 10 locations in the Charlotte area, as well as more spots throughout North Carolina.

“We are excited to grow, one block at a time, and become a part of these awesome North Carolina communities,” Mostafavi said in an email.
