Sheetz could become the next owner of the former Mountaineer Inn property at 155 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805. WLOS reports that Asheville city officials are scheduled to meet with representatives from the Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain to discuss a potential purchase of the long-vacant site.

According to the report, Asheville’s principal planner confirmed the meeting as the property remains in foreclosure. While discussions are moving forward, no sale has been finalized, and no redevelopment plans or construction timeline have been announced.

The Mountaineer Inn, a longtime Asheville landmark that opened in 1939, has sat vacant after redevelopment plans by outdoor hospitality company LOGE Camps failed to materialize. The property has since been the subject of foreclosure proceedings and city code enforcement efforts.

Founded in 1952, Sheetz is a family-owned convenience store chain headquartered in Altoona, Pennsylvania. According to the company’s website, Sheetz operates more than 800 locations across the eastern United States, offering fuel, made-to-order food, coffee, beverages, and convenience items. Sheetz has continued expanding throughout North Carolina in recent years, including new stores in the Asheville market.

If the purchase moves forward, the former Mountaineer Inn property would add another location to Sheetz’s growing footprint in the state. Additional details are expected following the company’s meeting with city officials.
