A popular Dayton chef is opening his first brick and mortar restaurant in Dayton’s Oregon District at 416 E Fifth St.  According to posts on his Instagram account chef Dane Shipp is opening Culture by Chef Dane, an eatery with the tagline “food and vibes.” Shipp has cooked at pop-up events throughout Dayton for the past few years and while his menu rotates, it always features his signature style of incorporating diverse ingredients into flavorful combinations like hibachi burritos or a lobster and shrimp BLT.

Shipp has worked in Dayton restaurants that include Chappys Social House and Lock 27 Brewing. And through the pop-up events, which he started during the height of the pandemic three years ago, he has further solidified his presence in the Dayton food scene while also adding an online audience, (his personal Instagram account currently sits at over 11,000 followers).

What Now Columbus spoke with Shipp who shared that the menu at Culture will feature the unique recipes that people have come to know from his pop-up events. Although there isn’t a fixed menu at Culture, Shipp said he will continue to keep his focus on continually cooking something different for his customers.

His offerings tend to rotate seasonally, based on the locally sourced ingredients he uses, but Shipp also likes to put his own twist on food trends. One such trend he’s recently jumped on are chopped cheese sandwiches. The New York style sandwiches are a take on cheese steaks that are made with ground beef rather than chopped steak.

According to Shipp, Culture is slated to open in early fall, but as of now he’s hosting pop-up events at the Fifth Street location until the eatery opens fully.
