A Downton Denver spot that closed during the COVID pandemic in 2020 after serving up breakfast and lunch to diners since 1946 has new owners and a new menu.

Owner Lizeth Nunez Carrasco told What Now Denver that the new restaurant will keep the name 20th Street Café. “We found this perfect opportunity to open here at 20th Street knowing that they had actually closed down during the pandemic. We are thinking of serving Mexican food and also breakfast—pancakes, French toast, and coffee.”

Carrasco previously owned El Tarahumara Mexican Restaurant on West Colfax Avenue, but it closed because the location was to be demolished. The liquor license was transferred to the new 20th Street Café, so beer, wine, and cocktails will be served. Carrasco would also like to purchase an espresso and cappuccino machine.

Carrasco hopes to open in March, but it all depends on how quickly the City of Denver can move forward with permitting. According to city permitting information, the tenant improvement will include renovating restrooms and adding new kitchen equipment. Interior renovations include tables, booths, and new artwork.

“We are so happy, excited and hoping that our neighbors come and visit us, and they like it just as much as they liked 20th Street Café before.”

Jay Soneff, president of Jamis Companies, is the owner of the building that houses 20th Street Café.
