El Chingon, a family-owned Mexican restaurant that recently reopened in a new location in the Santa Fe Arts District, is temporarily closed following a kitchen fire. According to the Denver Post, the business suffered a blaze on June 27, which put a halt to operations.
The blaze ignited during lunch service and only affected the kitchen and the roof above it, though other parts of the building have smoke damage. There were no injuries. It’s unknown when they can reopen, but there is the possibility of serving out of a second kitchen on site with a temporary menu.
In a Facebook post on June 29, El Chingon wrote, “We will continue to be closed while we work through all details for reopening. Please continue to support small businesses wherever you can.”
The building was home to El Noa Noa for 45 years before the owners of El Chignon took possession this spring. What Now Denver announced a few months ago that it would be the next tenant at the space. It had just celebrated its grand opening on June 19, just nine days before the fire.
Originally founded by Gloria Nunez in 2010 in Arvada, El Chingon has relocated several times, including locations in Berkeley and LoHi. Last year, an outpost at Denver International Airport opened.
