A local couple is trying to move ahead with plans to open a new coffee shop in Franktown, but are experiencing issues with city approvals. Brandon and Heidi Messer purchased the property at 2006 S Kelty Rd to open their second java business, but are frustrated with bureaucratic red tape, he told What Now Denver.

The couple also owns the Parker Coffee Cabin, and posts from last year show they bought the Franktown building (which used to house Owls Nest) to open a similar business, either also called Coffee Cabin or branded as FN Coffee. Plans were to open on July 4 of last year, but the day before, Douglas County added a long list of requirements, and there has been tension with commissioners.

“We currently do not have an opening date. It has been dragged through the months since. We have been striving to open our small business for over a year now and are coming up on the anniversary of one year since we were red-tagged and shut down,” Brandon said.

“When we bought it, we were just going to update the kitchen to pass and meet Health Code and reopen it. Now we are being required to do all kinds of updates, from a grease trap, electrical service upgrade, structural drawings, elevations, stormwater quality retention ponds, and getting approval from CDOT. We have been met and riddled with expense after expense after expense of County demands,” he added.

Plans filed with Douglas County state the 1,653-square-foot space can accommodate 38 seats, have a 6-car drive-thru, and feature 13 customer parking spaces and 4 spots for employees. Architect Adam C. Miller and engineer Troy Denning of Action Civil Engineering are listed on the project.
