Sahara Durango Shopping Center will soon welcome a new location of the Reno-born cake shop The Cake Slice into its community.
Owner Michelle Kitchen spoke with What Now Las Vegas by phone on Friday, relating the cake shop’s journey, which began with a project called Custom Cakes by Kitchen that ultimately funded the birth and expansion of The Cake Slice, with three locations already open in Reno.
The Las Vegas Cake Slice locations will retain the same successful menu from the Reno storefronts: cakes made from scratch, cake by the slice, cake cups—“A bit like a trifle,” Kitchen said—and “cake bombs.”
The location on Sahara Ave was much in demand, Kitchen said, as it was already outfitted with a kitchen and grease interceptor. Michael Kaplan, the landlord broker for the property, connected with Michelle and her husband David Kitchen, and the deal was made. Further storefront Cake Slice locations are in the offing, all of which to be supplied by the Sahara Ave kitchen.
“These are homemade butter cakes,” Kitchen said. “They’re exceptional. They do well because they’re really unique. They need to be tried to be understood.”
Sahara Durango Shopping Center has a local population of more than 173,000 within a three-mile radius and includes other restaurants and retail shops like Smart & Final, Del Taco, and Peg’s Glorified Ham & Eggs.
