Smart and Final-Anchored Freedom Plaza To Welcome Ross On March 7, Nike On April 9

Plus The Habit Burger and Starbucks are on track to open in the retail center in spring and summer 2020.

Freedom Plaza, the retail component of the $5 Bn Jordan Downs public housing redevelopment project in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, starting next month will welcome a new string of tenants.

Discount retailer Ross is up first with a projected March 7, 2020 debut, Shajira Hope, corporate director of marketing for Freedom Plaza developer Primestor Tuesday confirmed in an email to What Now Los Angeles.

Nike will open its store in the retail center nearly a month later, on April 9, 2020, Hope wrote.

The Habit Burger Grill, which last week was issued the necessary permitting to build out its Freedom Plaza restaurant, is aiming for a late-April debut, pending construction,

Starbucks will join its fellow tenants in the development sometime in the summer.

January was a big month for the new ground-up center with the opening of its anchor tenant, Smart & Final.

“We’re proud to be providing jobs and bringing convenient and easy access to fresh and healthy foods to this neighborhood,” Aldo Duran, store manager of the new Smart & Final location, said in a press release at the time of the store’s opening last month.

“We’re excited to be part of the redevelopment of Jordan Downs, and we’re looking forward to serving the community for many years to come.”

Bright Now! Dental and Blink Fitness have also already opened for business in the 114,431-square-foot Freedom Plaza.

Jordan Downs, originally built for factory workers during World War II, in the 1950s was converted to low-income housing.

In addition to Freedom Plaza, the multi-billion-dollar redevelopment project includes new parks and 1,400 residential units.
