A brand-new restaurant, Mutsu, is set to make its debut in West Hollywood at 348 1/2 N. La Cienega Blvd.
The new restaurant is reportedly set to open in the former location of Absolutely Phobulous, according to recently approved documents submitted to the Los Angeles City Planning Department. With opening targeted for mid August, the recent approval means owner Thomas Fuks is getting closer to welcoming guests.
Formerly referred to as Kage, the concept has since evolved into Mutsu, a casual Japanese restaurant celebrating connection through food. While different from the initially proposed fine-dining seafood tasting menu, Mutsu now aims to offer approachable Japanese fare, including chirashi bowls, yellow curry, katsu chicken, yakitori, bao buns, and more.
Fuks shared with What Now Los Angeles that the name Mutsu is derived from the Japanese word mutsumi, meaning “harmony,” and reflects the restaurant’s core philosophy of fostering connection between guests and chefs, food and season, tradition and modern life. Developed by hospitality group 111, the concept is rooted in a love of Japanese craftsmanship, California’s seasonal offerings, and minimalist beauty. Mutsu was created to elevate the izakaya experience while preserving its authenticity. At its heart is a focus on open preparation, counter-side interaction, and thoughtfully crafted dishes, most notably the signature Chirashi Bowl, which Fuks describes as the perfect harmony of rice, fish, fire, and flavor.
Editorial Note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated the restaurant would be called Kage; it has been pointed out that the correct name is Mutsu.
