Brentwood is bound for a brand new Mexican restaurant, headed by longtime restaurateur Bruce Marder. Baja Norté will fill the space at 148 S. Barrington, formerly the home of Marder’s 1999-established Brentwood Restaurant & Lounge. Marder has re-branded and redesigned the inside, especially with interest for social distancing. He told What Now Los Angeles (WNLA) that he hopes to officially open the patio space on July 29.
The website for the up-and-coming restaurant describes the menu as having “elevated Mexican food.” Since the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a quarantine shut down, Marder has been “re-experimenting with his Mexican food roots.” The new Brentwood restaurant is expected to mix vibrant colors with sultry lighting and intimate booths alongside a menu of tamales, fresh ceviche, and Oaxaca fried chicken.
“There aren’t really any good Mexican restaurants that aren’t cheesy, gooey stuff,” said Marder. “[Baja Norté will offer] fine-dining Mexican food, more product-based, and more prepared … I’m kind of trying to keep it simple and keep it away from being too kooky.”
Since 1972, Marder has opened and consulted on 13 restaurants. He is currently operating Capo, Cora’s Coffee Shoppe, Red Rooster Bakery, Café Brentwood, and Marvin.
