A recent Millington Planning Commission meeting ended on a delicious note and the promise of a new favorite family eatery. The agenda for the July 21 meeting shows that A&W Restaurant has received approval to turn a vacant U.S. 51 space into its newest Tennessee home.

A&W, which specializes in homey versions of comfort foods, will be renovating a former Pizza Hut located at 7911 U.S. 51. According to paperwork filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development, the building will provide A&W with 3,236 square feet of space and will be able to seat up to 76 customers.

An opening date is not presently available for the location, however the intention is to open before the end of the year.

The Millington storefront will be the first in Memphis in quite awhile. Franchisee Hussein Salloukh previously explained to Daily Memphian that the neighborhood is the perfect location for A&W to make its return to the region, saying: “For this area, this is going to be something fairly new…(Millington) is a good spot. Everything around Millington is growing. It’s been a hot market recently.”

The chain, distinguished by its beloved root beer, has been on the dining scene since 1919. Future Millington regulars can look forward to enjoying a menu populated with classic American fare, including burgers, chicken tenders, and hot dogs. Visitors with a sweet craving can indulge in a milkshake or-of course-a root beer float.
