It takes a special restaurant to capture the eye and attention of the Michelin Guide. It takes an absolutely remarkable concept to earn that attention without actively being open. Memphis’s own Kinfolk has achieved such a feat; Cole Jeanes’ labor of culinary love is temporarily closed but has sparked the interest of Michelin, which intends to put out a guide for the American South. Fortunately for Jeanes, Michelin, and Memphis foodies, the restaurateur has every intention of reopening in the same spot where Kinfolk first greeted customers, reports the Memphis Business Journal.

The popular breakfast and brunch spot has had a bit of an unfortunate history in battling leaks and water infiltration at its 111 Harbor Town Square storefront. Kinfolk shuttered once in 2024 owing to flooding and once again closed its doors earlier this summer owing to mold resulting from floods. However, Jeanes is determined to hold the high ground. He has no intention of relocating Kinfolk, however repairs are necessary for the storefront, as is an ounce or so of prevention. He states: “I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to stay and I want to fix it,” he said. “But, I want to fix it so I don’t have to close again. I can’t keep opening and closing.”

How long, precisely, Kinfolk will remain closed is not yet clear. Jeanes is bridging the gap through a popup location at Hard Times Deli. Kinfolk’s official social media page shows that the public’s enthusiasm for the restaurant has in no way diminished, and between the local passion and Michelin’s interest, Kinfolk’s opening can’t come fast enough. However, Jeanes is committed to ensuring the reopening is done correctly-and permanently-making it impossible to estimate a date.

It is no wonder that Kinfolk has inspired admiration both within the industry and among local foodies. The restaurant’s drive and ethos is representative of the best of the hospitality world: “Kinfolk is a taste of the Mississippi Delta, a place where delicious food and community come together. We’re passionate about showcasing the region’s culinary heritage, using ingredients sourced directly from local regenerative and organic farms. Our commitment to quality extends beyond our kitchen, as we strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through our doors.”
