Good food is both a language unto itself and can also serve as a Rosetta Stone between cultures. A chef can use their creations to communicate with a diner in a way that transcends spoken or written words. A new bakery is preparing to bring this exact magic to Memphis; a concept called A’s Bakery that will focus on Aghan cuisine has submitted paperwork to open in the neighborhood, and it’s moving steadily through the process, portending an opening in the not-too-distant future.
Paperwork filed with the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development reveals that the 695 Avon Road storefront will span 1,024 square feet. The certificate of occupancy states that the space required: “Light renovation including wall, painting, counter and flooring.” The project is the brainchild of Jumakhan Sarwari; What Now Memphis has reached out to the owner and has not yet heard back. We will provide updates as they become available.
The bakery is still awaiting certain permits, however the concept is nearing the finish line, ensuring Memphis residents will soon be able to enjoy Afghan sweets.
