Sweet Magnolia Gelato is getting ready to open its third location. Permits filed on Develop901 reveal that the shop will soon welcome guests to 4000 Summer Ave, Suite 111.

This new addition will join Sweet Magnolia’s existing locations at Crosstown Concourse and at the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford. The flagship shop, which was located in Downtown Memphis’ Puck Food Hall, ceased operations when the food hall closed its doors during the pandemic.

While owner and self-taught ice cream maker Hugh Balthrop confirmed this development with What Now Memphis, he remained tight-lipped about the specifics, stating that he’ll reach out with more information once the details are finalized.

Established in 2011 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Sweet Magnolia started as Balthrop’s casual home hobby but quickly evolved into a passion project. To refine his skills beyond his early experiments, Balthrop attended a specialized ice cream-making course at Penn State University and apprenticed under an experienced gelato master, according to Memphis Food & Wine Festival.

At Sweet Magnolia, Balthrop employs traditional Italian techniques, flavor profiles, and equipment while adding a unique Southern flair to many of his sweet creations. Fan favorite flavors include Pistachio, Tiramisu, Ms. Mary’s Poundcake, and Whiskey and Pecans.

In addition to the Sweet Magnolia storefronts, customers can find their favorite gelato flavors by the pint at Whole Foods, Cordelia’s Market, and High Point Grocery, as well as online at Goldbelly.

Keep an eye out for a grand opening day as this exciting expansion unfolds.
