A quartet of Memphis-area hospitality veterans are preparing for their next act, after launching one of the region’s most exciting restaurants last year. Moises and Maggie Hernandez and Darrell and Betsy Horn are following up the success of Briza’s opening with The Tradition, a new concept set to join an up-coming East Memphis mixed-use development, reports Commercial Appeal.

The Tradition is part of the planned redevelopment of the former Houston’s restaurant’s site, located at 5000 Poplar Avenue. While the concept is still in its nascent stages, some preliminary details are available to paint a vague but still intriguing picture. The Tradition will span 6,300 square feet and will have seating for up to 170 customers. This information, while certainly relevant, is unlikely to inspire too much anticipation for the project; the talent behind the restaurant, however, is certain to pique local interest.

Executive chef Moises Hernandez was the apron behind the Houston’s kitchen until its December of 2024 closure. Additionally, the quartet behind The Tradition launched Briza, an innovative concept that fuses steak, sushi, and seafood. While the precise nature of The Tradition has not yet been defined-what type of cuisine to expect and its atmosphere still remain to be seen-it is clear that it is being helmed by a visionary culinary team.

Memphis foodies eager to enjoy The Tradition will need to exercise some patience; the restaurant will not be opening until early 2028.
