In news certain to whet the appetites of Memphis foodies, a popular Midtown restaurant is planning a second location. Tonica, known for its Mediterranean tapas and cocktail bar chic atmosphere, will be opening a new storefront Downtown later this year, reports Commercial Appeal.

Owner John Paul Gagliano has applied for a retail improvement grant to aid in the renovations necessary to transform the space at 265 South Front Street from Pretty Taco into Tonica’s new home. If all goes according to plan, the 4,000 square foot restaurant-complete with a cocktail bar and Sunday brunch offerings-will be opening this October.

Front Street holds a special spot in Gagliano’s heart and family history. He states: “This project is more than just another restaurant opening for me — it’s a homecoming. Over 20 years ago, my mother opened her very first restaurant on Front Street, Fratellis, just a couple blocks away from Tonica’s future home.”

Gagliano brings considerable knowledge and experience to the table, having successfully launched three restaurants-Tonica’s existing Midtown location, Libro, and Ecco. His next venture is certain to be one of the major restaurant events of the fall and is already causing buzz among foodies and fans across social media.
