Shawmut Design and Construction, a $2 billion national construction management firm, and Clearline Real Estate, a multifamily real estate developer, officially broke ground on Excel Miami, a 24-story, residential tower at 1550 NE Miami Place in Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District.

When completed, Excel Miami will include 427 rental apartments. To accommodate a variety of living space needs, units will range from studios to two-bedroom apartments, with square footage ranging from approximately 400 to 1,000, and include 13 townhouse loft units. The building also will have an amenity deck on the sixth floor, featuring a pool, yoga deck, fitness center, coworking space, film room, and podcast suites to create a place for community, wellness, productivity, and entertainment. Its location just around the corner from the Metromover School Board station also makes it transit-friendly.

The groundbreaking was attended by Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, Commissioner Damian Pardo (District 2), Clearline Real Estate Founder and CEO Jenny Bernell, Shawmut CEO Les Hiscoe, Shawmut head of Florida Alexis Leal, and members of the project team.

Excel Miami was envisioned by design architect Arquitectonica, with LEO A DALY as architect-of-record. The façade will include a mural from international graffiti artist Claudia ‘MadC’ Walde. In the upcoming weeks, the team will conduct the first mat foundation pour and install the tower crane.

“We are thrilled to break ground on Excel Miami, a project that is the next chapter in our 25-year legacy of contributing to the city’s evolving landscape,” said Alexis Leal, Shawmut’s head of Florida in a statement. “This development will provide much-needed housing options in an activated, walkable location and bring critical mass to an area that has transformed immensely, contributing to the vibrant culture of Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District.”

Shawmut’s expansion into multifamily in South Florida comes alongside recent rapid growth, with current and recent projects including Town Vineland in Orlando, Manor Miramar in Miramar, Apogee Club in Hobe Sound, Waterway Café in Palm Beach, Nami at the Lake Nona Wave Hotel, and work in Hotel AKA Brickell and Hilton West Palm Beach.
