Habit Burger & Grill is expanding its South Florida footprint with a new restaurant planned for Fort Lauderdale.

The fast-casual burger chain has filed permit applications with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation for a restaurant at 6500 NW 12th Ave., Suite 101. An opening date has not yet been announced. Florida is already a growth market for the chain, with 14 Habit Burger & Grill restaurants operating across the state as of July, including locations in Plantation, Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens.

Founded in Santa Barbara, California, in 1969, Habit built its reputation around burgers cooked over an open flame. Its signature Charburger features fresh ground beef with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles and mayonnaise on a toasted bun.

The menu goes beyond burgers, with grilled chicken, sirloin steak and ahi tuna sandwiches, along with salads, fries, onion rings, tempura green beans and hand-spun shakes. Other burger choices include the Santa Barbara Char, BBQ Bacon Char and Teriyaki Char.

Habit Burger & Grill has grown to 388 restaurants nationwide as of June 30, according to the latest financial filing from parent company Yum! Brands. Yum! Brands acquired Habit in 2020, adding the burger concept to a restaurant portfolio that also includes Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut.
