According to a sign permit and a beer board permit filed today, a new bar and restaurant concept called Schulman’s will be opening in East Nashville at 1201 Porter Rd. in the former Southern Grist Brewing Co. building. The idea comes from Bill Miller, founder and CEO of Icon Entertainment.
An opening timeline is not currently known, however, the stage of the permitting process and beer board application indicates the restaurant may be opening sooner rather than later. It’s likely to see a late summer or early fall grand opening, although this is not confirmed.
Miller’s portfolio of local bars and restaurants includes the Johnny Cash Museum, Patsy Cline Museum, Nudie’s Honky Tonk, Skull’s Rainbow Room, House of Cards, and the recently opened Sinatra Bar & Lounge. Schulman’s will become the first concept to open from Miller away from the downtown area.
Although not much is known about the details of Schulman’s upcoming menu, its familiar name is reminiscent of the iconic restaurant, bar, and jazz venue Skull’s Rainbow Room in Printer’s Alley, founded by David “Skull” Schulman. Former head chef of Skull’s Rainbow Room Gannon Leary is also opening his own downtown Nashville restaurant called Gannon’s, which What Now Nashville previously reported on last month.
A connection between the name of Miller’s new East Nashville restaurant and the original owner of Skull’s Rainbow Room has not been confirmed.
If the new concept will be anything like Miller’s other successful businesses, an upscale menu and swanky atmosphere can be expected, while catering to East Nashville’s neighborhood-specific culture.
Schulman’s does not yet have a website or social media established. What Now Nashville reached out for comment from Miller, but did not immediately hear back by the time of publication.
